Tasting Notes: Uncle Bogue Bourbon

Doc Brown Uncle Bogue Bourbon

The next chapter in the Book of Bogue has arrived.

I received a sample of the new batch of limited release Uncle Bogue Special Reserve Bourbon from Doc Brown Farm & Distillers out of Senoia, Georgia. Doc Brown aged their signature high rye Jimmy Red Corn bourbon in French Oak Touriga wine barrels from neighboring Wolf Mountain Winery. Touriga Nacional, a thick-skinned grape variety from Portugal, is known for its rich color and excellent aging potential, producing exceptional floral and fruity flavors like black currants and raspberries.

After resting for four years the team blended in some seven-year-old OZ Tyler bourbon, then finished the blend in an additional OZ Tyler American white oak spiral-barrel, giving the blend time to mingle and the double-oaked flavor to deepen. The resulting flavor of this bourbon truly tests my ability to articulate the depth of flavors and composition of this bourbon. The proof level leaves an abundance of flavor to be enjoyed and the double oak smooths out the heat to allow for an exceptionally smooth sip despite this bourbon being bottled at cask strength.

The initial nose punches you right in the gob with blackberry jam, grape cordial, and ripened summer berries. The flavor is complex, as is the structure, full of intrigue and exciting layers. The mouthfeel is incredible. Maple, vanilla and almond come through in the middle of the palate to reveal a floral, sweet and soft oak finish that is long and luxurious.

Never heard of Doc Brown Farm & Distillers? You’re missing out on what this brand is doing!
